Press Release: The WP Community Collective Launches the State of the Community Survey

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 27, 2026 — The WP Community Collective (The WPCC) today launched the State of the Community survey, a first-of-its-kind initiative inviting all members of the WordPress ecosystem to share how they are feeling about the WordPress open source project, its future, and the forces shaping it.

Topics include overall sentiment toward the WordPress project, the impact of artificial intelligence, open source sustainability, and community participation. The survey takes approximately 10-20 minutes to complete and all responses are anonymous.

The WPCC encourages anyone who works with, contributes to, builds on, or cares about the WordPress open source project and its surrounding ecosystem to take the survey.

The State of the Community survey is open May 27 through June 27, 2026, at: https://thewpcommunitycollective.com/state-of-the-community

Change Needs Context

Over the past few years, the WordPress ecosystem has experienced significant change at every level, from the focus of the product core to the shifts of the larger tech industry. While community members may know anecdotally the impact this has had on various individuals and organizations across the ecosystem, there is no collective understanding of what those changes mean for the community or how they affect the future of the WordPress open source project.

The State of the Community survey is intended to change that, by giving the people in the WordPress community the data they need to understand and plan for the future.

“The WordPress community is not hypothetical. It is a real community, made up of real people navigating real challenges in the real world. If we want to effectively support and sustain that community, we have to ask the people in it what is important to them. And then we have to listen.”

Sé Reed – CEO, The WP Community Collective

Built around sentiment and lived experience, the survey invites participants to reflect on what they’re feeling, what is important to them, and where they believe WordPress is headed, reflecting the mission of The WPCC to prioritize the people that make open source possible.

Objective Data, Open Results

As an independent, member-based organization, The WPCC is uniquely positioned to gather candid, unfiltered perspectives from across the WordPress ecosystem. The survey is not affiliated with any commercial entity, and its findings will be shared openly with the community.

The State of the Community survey is intended to be repeated annually with consistent methodology. The survey design was informed by the GitHub Open Source Survey, as well as standard academic instruments for measuring human perception and well-being. The survey was written in English and has translations available for Spanish, French, Japanese, Hindi, and Portuguese.

Responses will be used to produce a public report summarizing what the community is experiencing, identifying trends, and surfacing insights that can inform how organizations, contributors, and leaders show up for the WordPress open source project and support the people who make it possible.
